What is divisional barrel racing?
Divisional barrel racing is an event in which a horse and rider attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around preset barrels in the fastest time possible.
It is a sport that combines the horse's athletic ability and the horsemanship skills of a rider in order to safely and successfully maneuver a horse around three barrels placed in a triangular pattern, within a large arena.
To begin, the horse and rider will enter the arena and select either a left or right approach to their first barrel. The time starts when the electric timer beam is crossed by the horse and rider. The timer keeps running until the beam is crossed again at the end of the run.
The divisions in “Divisional Barrel Racing” are set by time increments. Denim & Lace use one second splits for their senior events. This means the fastest time that day sets the first division and the following divisions are established by one second increments below that.
For example, if the fastest time set on that day was a 16.355 seconds, the divisions would be as below;
1st Division (1D) between 16.355 and 17.354 seconds
2nd Division (2D) between 17.355 and 18.354 seconds
3rd Division (3D) 18.355 and 19.354 seconds
4th Division (4D) between 19.355 and 20.354 seconds
All competitors run in the same event and the divisions are then determined when the results are completed. Divisional barrel racing is a fun format for all levels of competitors. It’s the perfect opportunity for newcomers and beginners.
No matter how professional or young you and your horse are, a Denim & Lace event is a great way to have fun, season a horse or even win an event!
